The construction industry is not regulated by the State of Illinois as a whole. In Illinois, each individual city and municipality have established their own laws in order to regulate general contractors. If a contractor is looking to begin any type of residential or commercial project, they will first need to verity with the city or county in order to determine which types of licenses and permits they will need to have.
Each city has certain regulations that were created in order to protect the public and these laws hold general contractors accountable for performing work that is of the highest quality and that meets the appropriate safety standards.
Since each city and municipality have their own laws that are specific to their area, general contractors need to make sure they check the regulations in the area before they start any work in Illinois. Below are the general contractor licensing requirements for Chicago, in order to give an example of what these requirements may look like.
In the City of Chicago, general contractors are required to hold a license from the city and these licenses are issued by the City of Chicago Department of Buildings. The licenses are only issued once a year. Licenses are broken up into different classifications, labeled A through E and these determine the size and value of the projects that contractors are permitted to work on. The license fees will differ according to which classification the Illinois contractor is applying for.
The City of Chicago is dedicated to the safety of their residents and strive to have the highest quality of construction work performed. They are always looking to promote the conservation, renovation and reusing of structures and buildings that already exist if it is at all possible.
General contractors need to perform their due diligence before beginning any project and their first step needs to be checking the regulations of the city and municipality in which they will be working before they start any project in Illinois.
